World Mission Day

This Sunday, 21 Oct, is World Mission Day, a day of prayer for the evangelisation of the world.  There will be a retiring collection to support the work of Missio.

Remembrance Sunday 11 November

There will be an Act of Remembrance after the 10am Mass at 10.50am, outside the cathedral.  Please assemble on the pavement in front of the cross. The 11.30am Mass will be a Requiem Mass for all those killed in War & Conflict celebrated by Archbishop Peter.
To mark the centenary of the end of World War One there will be a Service of Thanksgiving and Prayer of Peace at 3pm in Southwark Anglican Cathedral.  Canon Richard will be preaching, and our choir will be taking part . All are warmly invited.

Prisons Sunday & Prisons Week

This Sunday (14 October) begins a week of prayer for those in prison and ther families, those who work in the criminal justice system and those affected by crime.  A representative of PACT will speak at all Masses and there will be a retiring collection to support their valuable work.

Saint Oscar Romero

Archbishop Romero was canonised in Rome on Sunday 14 October by Pope Francis.  There will be a National Mass of Thanksgiving in the cathedral on Saturday 3 November at 12.30pm.  Principal celebrant will be Archbishop Peter and the homily will be given by Archbishop Bernard Longley. Special prayer cards are available at the back of the cathedral.

First Holy Communion Programme

If your child is in primary school Year 3 or above and you would like them to make their First Holy Communion here next year, the preparation programme starts in early December. Weekly classes are Amigo Hall every Saturday at 11am during term time. Application forms  available from the Cathedral Clergy.  Applications with a copy of your child's Baptism Certificate must be submitted to the Cathedral Office by Sunday 28 October 2018.

Becoming a Catholic

If you would like to know more about the Catholic Church with a view to becoming a Catholic, a programme of instruction is running on a  Sunday morning at 10am in Amigo Hall.  You have been thinking about this for some time, or are already a Catholic but for whatever reason were never confirmed.  Perhaps a friend or family member may like to be invited to join the programme.

Wednesday 24 October, an evening marking the the centenary of WW1 Armistice Day, the canonisation of Archbishop Oscar Romero, the unveiling of a new painting “Southwark Triptych” by Julian Pinnick, and a newly commissioned poem by Paul Munden entitled "Duet" about the Simon Burnett Wilfrid Owen / Siegfried Sassoon violins.
Tickets are available to buy for the reception hosted by Archbishop Peter at 6.15pm and the concert at 7.30pm - either on the door or online in advance at TicketSource:
The concert is free to under-18s.

School Reference Forms

Any reference forms that need to be signed by a priest should be put in an envelope with your name and phone number and left at the cathedral office. They will not be taken after Mass. Once the forms have been signed you will be contacted about collecting them.

October – Month of the Holy Rosary

St George’s Cathedral Catholic Primary School

If your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, they should start primary school in September 2019. St. George’s Cathedral Primary School have open days for prospective parents on the following dates;
Wednesday 17 October at 2pm
Wednesday 14 November at 10am
Wednesday 12 December at 10am

Young Adults Group

Our Young Adults Group meet every Sunday after 6pm Mass. We will recommence on Sunday 7 October at 7pm in the Amigo Hall. If you are aged between 18 to 35+ you are most welcome to come along. Please see Fr Paul after Mass or drop him an email:

Eucharistic Adoration

Eucharistic Adoration takes place in the Day Chapel every Friday starting at 8am, ending with simple Benediction at 6pm. There is also Adoration from 10am until 12.15pm on Saturday morning.

SVP Food Bank Collection

Our St Vincent de Paul Society is continuing to work with the Waterloo Foodbank to collect food for local people in crisis.  There has been a huge demand for help from the Foodbank over the summer period. Please give what you can. Collection baskets are at the back of the Cathedral.  Please see the posters at the back of the Cathedral for more details.

Fr Daniel Weatherley, Sub-Dean

Canon Richard and Fr Paul are delighted that Archbishop Peter has appointed Fr Daniel Weatherley to be the new Sub-Dean.  Many of you will remember that Fr Daniel spent his pastoral year at the cathedral.  Fr Daniel, who is presently in Canterbury, will start on the weekend of 22/23 September and we look forward to welcoming him. 

St Vincent De Paul Group

We have a small but enthusiastic group of parishioners who work together to help those in need - the lonely and isolated or those who don't have enough food to eat or even a home to live in.  You could help this vital work by joining the parish SVP group and giving a little of your time to helping others.  Call 07716 533621 to find out more.

Appointment of new Director of Music

The Dean of St George's Cathedral, Southwark is delighted to announce that Jonathan Schranz has been appointed to be the Cathedral Director of Music with effect from January 2019.
Canon Richard Hearn says, "Jonathan will bring a great deal to the role and I am confident that he will build upon the great work that his predecessor Norman Harper has done both in developing the choir and enhancing the music tradition at St George's Cathedral".

Our Director of Music, Norman Harper, will be retiring from his post at the end of the year. Norman has done a tremendous amount to develop the music at St George's for which we are extremely grateful. There will be an opportunity to formally thank Norman towards the end of the year.

St George’s Cathedral Choirs CD

The CD recording produced by our Cathedral Choirs is now available. Entitled: “O Sacrum Convivium - Music for the Mass”, it features our Girls’ Choir, Boys’ Choir, Choral Scholars and Lay Clerks.  It costs £12 per CD.  The CDs are available to buy in the repository after the 10am and 11.30am Masses, where payment is accepted by cash and cheque.  The CDs can also be ordered online using a credit or debit card by clicking here:
