    St George's Cathedral has a well-established musical tradition, with a diversity of styles represented at the different Masses, ranging from congregational hymns and Mass settings at the 10am Family Mass sung by the Cathedral Consort youth choir, through plainsong and polyphony at the 12pm Solemn Mass sung by the Cathedral Choir of choristers and lay clerks. There is also a Junior Choir for younger children and the Cathedral runs the Southwark Singing Programme.

  • Cathedral Choir

    The Cathedral Choir is made up of boys and girl choristers aged 8 to 13 along with eight professional singers known as Lay Clerks. The Cathedral Choir sings at the Sunday morning 12noon Solemn Mass and on major events of the year, such as Advent, Christmas, Holy Week and Easter.

  • Cathedral Consort

    The Cathedral Consort was formed in 2019, and is a select group of teenagers aged 13 and upwards, who lead worship at the 10am Family Mass through congregational mass settings and SATB motets.

  • Cathedral Junior Choir

    The Cathedral Junior Choir is our choir for children in school years 3-6. They rehearse in the Cathedral Song Room on Thursdays from 4-5pm and sing for weekly Benediction as well as one Mass per month in the Cathedral.

    The Cathedral Children’s Choir is our choir for children in school years 1 & 2, aged 5-7.

  • Southwark Singing Programme

    Established in 2022 the Southwark Singing Programme (SSP) is a Diocesan music education programme which works in partnership with schools and parishes to develop musical provision and sacred singing across the diocese.

    The Cathedral Music Department is lead by the Diocesan Director of Music​, joined by our Cathedral Organist and a team of professional Lay Clerks.

    The termly service music lists include all the Mass settings, hymns and chant antiphons for the choral services at the Cathedral, including Sunday 10am Family Mass and 12noon Solemn Mass, as well as Easter, Christmas and other special Cathedral services.

    The Cathedral organ was built by John Compton Organ Company Ltd and was completed in 1958.
